Pulmonary Artery Banding (PAB)

Right heart failure can be caused by persistent right ventricular over-load, one consequence of pulmonary hypertension. Many patients with primary pulmonary hypertension or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) die of right heart failure. PAB models are very useful in developing effective therapy.

  • Efficacy Study in PAB Model (Mouse/Rat)

PAB animal model is induced by placing a band at pulmonary trunk. This leads to right ventricular over-load and hypertrophy. Increased right ventricular free wall can be shown by Masson's trichrome staining in PAB mice (lower) when compared with SHAM mice (upper).

An effective treatment can inhibit right ventricular remodeling and fibrosis (blue) in the heart (right panel).

This treatment can also block right ventricular hypertrophy in PAB mice (lower, 10x), compared to vehicle (upper, 10x).
